Maternal Fetal Medicine

Maternal Fetal Medicine

What is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist?

MFM specialists, also referred to as Perinatologists, have completed additional years of education and training and are experts in high risk pregnancy.  They specialize in things that are not routine and provide care to those who face unexpected complications for mom or baby during pregnancy and those who are at higher risk due to pre-existing health conditions or conditions that develop during pregnancy.  Having a high-risk pregnancy does not necessarily mean there is a problem with the baby or that your pregnancy is dangerous. It may simply mean you’ll get closer monitoring because you are at a slightly higher risk.

MFM also provides non invasive early prenatal screening with ultrasound and specialized lab tests to evaluate for chromosomal issues and other anomalies as well as diagnostic testing with amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) when needed.
